How the exam is structured

CDCR's bulletin states the written test 'will consist of three component(s), Policy and Procedures, Reading and Writing Comprehension, and Supervisory Skills.' It publishes no item count, no duration and no per-segment weighting — every number you see for those on a preparation site, including timing figures on RankHigh's own practice sets, is the provider's own pacing choice, not CDCR's.

The eligible list this exam produces is multi-departmental — it fills Correctional Sergeant vacancies for CDCR and CCHCS, but explicitly excludes CALPIA. It remains in effect until CDCR gives a new Correctional Sergeant exam, and may be abolished after 12 months even if no new exam has run.

What each segment covers

Policy and Procedures covers Use of Force policy and Peace Officer Authority and Mutual Aid.

Reading and Writing Comprehension covers reading comprehension and paragraph organization — two task formats CDCR's own study guide prints under this segment.

Supervisory Skills covers Equal Employment Opportunity, Health/Safety/Workplace Violence, and Inmate Discipline.
