Sample question 1 of 3

Verbal Comprehension

The Brayton Police Department answers two kinds of records request. A summary request returns the date, place and classification of an incident and is answered within five business days. A full request returns the whole report with personal details removed and is answered within fifteen business days. A summary request may be converted to a full request, and the fifteen business days then run from the date of conversion. A full request may not be converted to a summary request.

A summary request is made on the 1st and converted to a full request on the 4th. What does the passage indicate?

What you have to take

The Ability section is a gate, not a third of your score

HRD states that a candidate must receive a passing score on the WAT before the Work Styles Questionnaire and Life Experience Survey are scored at all. Fail it and the rest of your exam is never marked. That is the section RankHigh prepares, and it is the one standing between you and a place on the list.

Written Ability Test

6 ability areas · must be passed first

Multiple-choice questions across the 6 ability areas HRD publishes for this section. Until it is passed, the other two sections are not scored.

Prepared in full by the modules below

Life Experience Survey

Scored only after the WAT is passed

Multiple-choice questions about your own history and experience. There is no syllabus to study and no right answer to learn.

Not prepared by RankHigh — see below

Work Styles Questionnaire

Scored only after the WAT is passed

Questions about motivational and attitudinal characteristics. Coaching answers to an instrument like this is not something we would do honestly.

Not prepared by RankHigh — see below

Pass/fail gate

Physical Ability Test

After a conditional offer · 3 timed events

HRD's Physical Fitness Standards Test Course: a 370-yard obstacle course with a takedown and handcuffing simulation (163.4s), a two-pull separation event against a 75lb bag (12.8s), and a 145lb dummy drag over 25 feet (11.2s). Every event is timed and every one has to be passed.

What this covers, and what it does not

RankHigh prepares the WAT — and only the WAT

Your exam has three sections. The Written Ability Test is the one with material to learn, and it is the one that has to be passed before the other two are scored. The Life Experience Survey asks about your own history and the Work Styles Questionnaire asks about how you work; neither has a syllabus, and neither is something we could coach you on honestly.

  • Written Ability Test — prepared in full, all six ability areas
  • Life Experience Survey — not prepared, and no product claims to
  • Work Styles Questionnaire — not prepared, for the same reason

RankHigh is independent and not affiliated with HRD, the MBTA, or any police department.

How this preparation is built

These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.

  • Every question is original
  • Every question carries an approval record
  • Every answer is explained
  • The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
Every question is original
Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
Every question carries an approval record
A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
Every answer is explained
All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
The bank is measured, not just proofread
Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

The examination details on this page were last checked against the official posting on 2026-08-18. Where an authority publishes no figure — a question count, a time limit, a passing score — this page says so instead of supplying one.

Questions

Which parts of the written examination does RankHigh cover?

The Written Ability Test, in full — all 6 ability areas. It does not cover the Life Experience Survey or the Work Styles Questionnaire. Those ask about your own history and how you work rather than anything you can study, and we would rather say so than sell you preparation for them.

Why does the Ability section matter more than the other two?

Because HRD scores it first. A candidate must receive a passing score on the WAT for the WSQ and LES sections to be scored at all — so it is not one third of your result, it is the gate in front of the other two.

Is this the same exam for municipal police and the MBTA Transit Police?

Yes. The Commonwealth runs one examination that establishes eligible lists for both civil service municipal police departments and the MBTA Transit Police. One application, one fee, one exam — so one preparation product rather than two.

How many questions is the real WAT, and how long do I get?

HRD does not publish either figure, so we do not claim one. RankHigh's simulations are 36 questions on a 54-minute clock we set as a training pace — the instructions you are given on test day are the ones that count.

Is this a subscription?

No. It is a single payment of $49. Nothing recurring, nothing to cancel, and no card kept on file for later.

How long do I have access?

Your access opens online as soon as payment clears — there is nothing to wait for in the post. Your one-time purchase includes 90 days of access from the time payment clears. No subscription. No automatic renewal. One payment, nothing recurring, nothing to cancel.

More questions (3)
Are these real questions from the exam?

No, and nobody selling preparation has them. Every question here was written from the ability areas HRD publishes, then reviewed before it shipped. They are built to work the same way the real ones do, which is the honest version of what practice questions can be.

Is RankHigh affiliated with Massachusetts Civil Service or the MBTA?

No. RankHigh is independent. Every fact shown here comes from HRD's own published material, and for anything that decides your application you should use the official posting and the notice they send you.

Does RankHigh guarantee a passing score?

No, and be careful with anyone who does. What this does is show you which areas are costing you points and give you focused practice on them. The work is still yours to do.

RankHigh is an independent preparation product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Massachusetts Human Resources Division, the Massachusetts government, or any city, county or department. Application and hiring decisions are made by the hiring authority — check the official posting for anything that decides your application. Every question in this bank was written for the 6 ability areas HRD publishes for the Written Ability Test, then reviewed item by item before it was allowed near a candidate.
