Massachusetts
Passing isn’t the point. Where you rank is.
Passing gets you onto the list. Where you sit on that list is what decides whether you get called, and the two are not the same thing.
What does the exam actually produce?
A place on an eligible list. Departments hire from that list in order, so your position on it — not your raw score — is what matters. Passing without ranking well can mean never being reached.
How are the two halves weighted?
The written examination and the ELPAT are each 50%. You must pass both to be placed on the eligible list at all.

Does a faster ELPAT time move me up the list?
No. The ELPAT is pass/fail against a published standard for each event. Finishing an event well inside its limit does not improve your position, so there is nothing to gain from chasing speed once you are comfortably clear. Train for margin as insurance against test-day conditions — nerves, an unfamiliar vest, six events already behind you — not for points.
So where is the list order actually won?
On the written half. That is the component that separates candidates who have all cleared the same physical standard. It is where preparation converts into position.
How exactly is the composite rank calculated from the two halves?
We have not confirmed this and will not guess. The 50/50 weighting is published; the precise arithmetic that turns two components into one list position is not something we have verified against HRD. Ask HRD directly before making a decision that depends on it.
We have not confirmed this. Rather than guess, we are telling you it is an open question — check it with Human Resources Division (HRD) before relying on it.
How does veteran preference work?
Massachusetts civil service does give veterans preference, and it can materially change where you land. Whether it operates as added points or as absolute preference in the certification order is something we have not confirmed, and the difference matters enormously — so we are not going to state it. If you are claiming it, confirm the mechanics with HRD.

Does living in the city or town help?
There is a residency preference. For the 2026 cycle it requires having resided in the municipality from October 2, 2025 through October 2, 2026.
