LASD Reading Comprehension Practice
LASD's guide defines this area as reading a short or medium passage and understanding what it communicates — not memorizing it, and not bringing in outside knowledge.
What this section tests
You are given a passage — LASD's guide describes both short and medium lengths — and questions about what it actually says: the main idea, a detail, or what a specific sentence means in context. The skill being measured is careful, literal reading, not general knowledge about the topic.
Example (illustrative, not from the official test): a short passage describes a department policy on returning found property, and the question asks which of four statements the passage actually supports — testing whether you can separate what the passage says from what sounds plausible.
How to prepare
Practice reading unfamiliar short passages and answering only from the text in front of you, resisting the pull to answer from what you'd expect a policy to say. Work at a pace that leaves time for all 60 items across the full 90 minutes, since this is one of eight areas sharing that clock.
