How to Prepare for the LASD Deputy Sheriff Trainee Written Test

LASD's own guide is honest that outside practice resources, including its own suggestions, are guides only and do not guarantee success. Here is a realistic way to use the time you have across all eight areas.

Cover all eight areas, not just the ones that feel weak

Because LASD publishes no split of the 60 items across the eight areas and no per-area weighting, there is no evidence any one area is worth more than another. Spread practice across reading comprehension, inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, spelling, writing grammar, writing clarity, vocabulary and data interpretation rather than concentrating only on what feels hardest.

Practice under the real time pressure

90 minutes for 60 items across eight different skill types is a pace, not just a content list — build up to answering under that pace so time management on test day isn't the first time you've felt it.

Know what this test does not ask

LASD states plainly that this test does not ask about laws or law enforcement, because these are entry-level titles requiring no prior peace officer experience. Time spent studying penal codes or department procedure for this specific test is time spent on the wrong thing — save it for the interview stage.
