New York Probation Series: the four subject areas, and why your announcement decides

The New York State Department of Civil Service publishes four subject areas for the Probation Series. It also says, in the guide itself, that the guide may not cover every subject on your particular examination — so the announcement your county publishes is what actually decides.

The four areas the Department publishes

Each carries a test task, at least one worked sample question and a full solution, which is more than most examinations publish about themselves.

  • Applying written information — read a rule printed with the question, then apply it to a situation.
  • Evaluating conclusions in light of known facts — decide whether statements prove a conclusion true, prove it false, or leave it undecided.
  • Preparing written material — two separate tasks: choosing the clearest version of a sentence, and putting a paragraph's sentences in order.
  • Advising and interacting with others — decide how to respond first to somebody who needs help, information or a decision.

Your county's announcement is the list that counts

The guide's own instruction is to refer to the Examination Announcement for the subjects included in your examination, under the heading Subjects of Examination. Two Suffolk County announcements read on 7 September 2026 show how much this matters.

Suffolk's Probation Officer Trainee test names evaluating conclusions in light of known facts, understanding and interpreting written material, client interviewing, and preparing written material. Its Probation Assistant test names understanding and interpreting written material including rules and procedures, preparing written material, preparing and maintaining records, and interviewing.

Those two lists are different from each other, and each contains one subject the series guide does not describe. Read your own announcement before you plan your revision.

Which titles this covers

The guide names them on its cover: Probation Assistant, Probation Officer 1 Trainee or Probation Officer Trainee, Probation Officer 1 or Probation Officer, Probation Officer 1 (Other Language) and Probation Officer 1 (Community Liaison). One guide, one test booklet, several titles.
