Coverage notes
- Two subjects some counties name are not prepared: understanding and interpreting written material, and preparing and maintaining records.
- Suffolk's Probation Officer Trainee and Probation Assistant tests name them; the Department publishes no test task for either in this series.
- The qualifying medical, physical and psychological evaluations, which publish no standard and are not scored.
View coverage details
- Two subjects a county may name that the series guide does not describe: Suffolk's Probation Officer Trainee test names "understanding and interpreting written material" and its Probation Assistant test names "preparing and maintaining records". The Department publishes no test task for either in this series, so neither is prepared here.
- The qualifying medical, physical and psychological evaluations, which publish no standard and are not scored.

(c) A Testing Referral Form is prepared only after the deputy director has authorized it in writing. SITUATION: Officer Devlin is the assigned officer for Tavares. What you have to take
One test, written by the State and run by your county
The Probation Series written test is prepared and rated by the New York State Department of Civil Service, and administered by county civil service agencies under Section 23-2 of the Civil Service Law. Suffolk County's announcements say exactly that, and the same guide covers Probation Assistant, Probation Officer Trainee and Probation Officer.
What differs between counties is the fee, the filing date, the exam date, the minimum qualifications and which subjects the announcement names — not the material. Suffolk ran Probation Officer Trainee in December 2025 and Probation Assistant in September 2026, so exam opportunities can arise around the state throughout the year rather than on one statewide date.
This is not the Correction Supervisors examination, and it is not the entry-level law enforcement series. Different guide, different subject areas, different candidate.

Written test
Multiple choice, prepared and rated by the State
The Department publishes four subject areas for this series, each with a test task, a worked sample question and its solution. It publishes no item count, no time allowance, no weighting between the areas and no passing score, and this product states none of those.

Qualifying steps after the written test
Suffolk County's announcements call candidates who pass the written test for a qualifying medical or physical evaluation and a personality or psychological evaluation. Both are pass/fail steps rather than scored components, they publish no standard, and RankHigh does not prepare them.

How this preparation is built
These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.
- Every question is original
- Every question carries an approval record
- Every answer is explained
- The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
- Every question is original
- Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
- Every question carries an approval record
- A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
- Every answer is explained
- All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
- The bank is measured, not just proofread
- Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

Questions
Which subjects will my examination actually cover?
Your own county's announcement decides, under the heading Subjects of Examination. The Department's guide describes four subject areas and says plainly that it may not cover every subject on a given examination — the two Suffolk announcements read on 7 September 2026 each name one subject it does not describe. All four published areas are prepared here, and the two it does not describe are named under the buy button rather than glossed over.
How many questions are on the real test, and how long is it?
The Department does not publish either figure for this series, and neither does this product. The two practice tests are forty questions in sixty minutes, which is RankHigh's pace and is labeled as RankHigh's everywhere it appears.
What is the passing score?
The series test guide states none. Individual county announcements state the general civil service rating rule rather than a mark for this examination, so no figure is published here.
Is this the same as the Correction Sergeant or the police officer exam?
No. Those are different examinations with different guides and different subject areas, and none of this material is shared with them. Two of the constructs here share a task name with the Correction Supervisors series because the Department uses the same task across several series, but that is a promotional examination for serving officers and this is an entrance examination.
Has a person read these questions?
Not yet, and the product says so rather than implying otherwise. Four of the five constructs have been independently re-derived by machine — every question, every one agreeing with the seated key — and the fifth is checked structurally and labelled as not derived. That is automated verification, which is not the same thing as human review.
Does it cover the interview, medical or psychological stages?
No. Those are qualifying steps after the written test, they publish no standard a product could prepare, and this package is written-test preparation only.

RankHigh is an independent preparation product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to New York State Department of Civil Service, the New York government, or any city, county or department. Application and hiring decisions are made by the hiring authority — check the official posting for anything that decides your application. Every construct is written from the Department's own Test Guide for the Probation Series, downloaded and read end to end on 7 September 2026 and linked that day from the Department's own test-guide index; the two Suffolk County announcements were read the same day. Nothing is reproduced from the guide: its four worked samples and their subjects appear nowhere in this bank, a gate refuses the bank if one does, and every scenario, name, office and procedure is invented.
