Sample question 1 of 3
Ability to Learn and Apply Information
Training Lesson: Introduction to the Dock Leveler Console The Dock Leveler Console (DLC-2) controls the hinged platform that bridges a delivery vehicle and the loading floor. The console shows one indicator light and a two-character display for each of its bays. Table 1. Dock Leveler Console conditions. When the platform is stowed and level, the indicator is steady white, the display reads D1, and no action is needed and no entry is made. When the platform is raised and in use, the indicator is steady blue, the display reads D3, and keep the bay gate closed until it stows. When the platform will not stow, the indicator is flashing blue, the display reads D5, and clear the platform of any load on it and then call the dock supervisor to the bay. When the safety lip has not folded, the indicator is flashing white, the display reads D6, and fold the lip by hand at the release lever. When the console has lost contact with the bay, the indicator is unlit, the display reads D8, and confirm the bay isolator is on first. After reading the display, work through these steps in order: 1. Read the bay number from the console header. 2. Carry out the action listed for that code in Table 1. 3. Sign the bay sheet before leaving the console. 4. Return the bay sheet to the console rack. One further rule applies to this bay: once the number of unstowed platforms reported in one shift reaches 2, the dock supervisor closes the bay for the rest of the shift.

What you have to take
One state test, and your county runs it
The Department of Civil Service writes and rates this examination; your county, city or town announces and administers its own exam. The state generally schedules the entry-level firefighter test for the first quarter of the year, with announcements out in October or November. That is also why the terms differ so much between jurisdictions — Monroe County sets no residency requirement to test and Dutchess County applies a thirty-day residence preference, and four Dutchess fire districts require an EMT certificate at appointment where others do not. It is not the entry-level police series, and it is not the FDNY examination, which New York City runs itself.

The written examination
4 published subject areas · multiple choice
Ability to learn and apply information, basic arithmetic, reading comprehension, and situational judgment. The guide says no specialized knowledge of firefighting is required, and that the training lesson describes equipment invented for the test.

The physical ability test
After the written test, pass or fail
Candidates who pass the written test take a qualifying physical ability test and a medical examination. Dutchess County publishes an eight-event protocol; Westchester allows one deferral and will waive it for a CPAT passed within twenty-four months. It is rated pass or fail rather than scored into your place on the list, and the standards are set locally.

How this preparation is built
These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.
- Every question is original
- Every question carries an approval record
- Every answer is explained
- The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
- Every question is original
- Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
- Every question carries an approval record
- A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
- Every answer is explained
- All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
- The bank is measured, not just proofread
- Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

Questions
How many questions are on the examination, and how long is it?
The guide publishes neither. We searched it: it states no number of questions and no time allowance, for the test as a whole or for any section. So RankHigh will not quote one. The practice tests here are 48 questions in 75 minutes, which is RankHigh's own pace for rehearsal and not a claim about the length of your exam.
What score do I need to pass?
The series test guide states none — the words 'passing' and 'score' do not appear in it. Check your own examination announcement, because the appointing jurisdiction is what states the rating rule. What the announcements do make clear is that the resulting eligible list is what vacancies are filled from, so where you sit on it matters as well as clearing the mark.
Do I have to memorize the training lesson?
No, and this is the single most useful thing to know about that section. The guide says all the information needed is provided in the training lesson and that candidates will be able to refer to it while answering the questions. It is open book. What is being measured is finding a value and combining two parts of the lesson under time, not recall — so preparation that drills memorization is training the wrong thing. The lesson also describes a piece of equipment that does not exist, which the guide says was created for the exam, so nothing you already know about real equipment helps.
Can I use a calculator?
The guide says candidates should bring a hand-held battery- or solar-powered calculator for the basic arithmetic section, and that the calculator function on a cell phone is not permitted. Check your own announcement as well, since the jurisdiction administering the test sets what may be brought into the room.
How can situational judgment be prepared for?
Because this guide publishes the standard. It prints the four-point effectiveness scale with each point defined by the outcome it is likely to produce, gives a worked scenario, and then states the correct rating and the reason for every one of its five sample responses. That is what makes the section coachable here. It is worth knowing that the Department's entry-level POLICE guide does not do this — it keys none of its situational samples — which is why RankHigh's police product does not prepare that section and this one does.
Is this the same test as the FDNY firefighter examination?
No. New York City runs its own firefighter examination through the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, with its own notice and its own filing periods. This product prepares the state-prepared Firefighter Series that local civil service agencies elsewhere in New York administer. The guide's own cover also excludes Mount Vernon and New Rochelle, which run their own examinations.
More questions (4)
Does this cover the physical test?
No. Candidates who pass the written test take a qualifying physical ability test and a medical examination, and some agencies require an EMT certificate at appointment. Those are rated pass or fail rather than scored into your position on the list, their standards are set by the jurisdiction rather than by the state, and RankHigh does not prepare them.
Is this a subscription?
No. It is a single payment of $49. Nothing recurring, nothing to cancel, and no card kept on file for later.
How long do I have access?
Your access opens online as soon as payment clears — there is nothing to wait for in the post. Your one-time purchase includes 90 days of access from the time payment clears. No subscription. No automatic renewal. One payment, nothing recurring, nothing to cancel.
Does RankHigh guarantee a passing score?
No, and be careful with anyone who does. What this does is show you which areas are costing you points and give you focused practice on them. The work is still yours to do.
