Memory, attention and space
Visualization
Determining how an object will appear once it is rotated, reflected or rearranged. No viewpoint is involved — the object moves, the observer does not. Requires a diagram.
Exams on RankHigh that test this
What follows is our approach, not an official rule. What each question type measures is set by the body that runs the examination. How to work one is RankHigh’s method — it is what a good tutor would tell you, and there is more than one way to be right. Where an examination publishes its own instructions, those govern on the day.
Imagining how something will look once it is moved, turned over, or its parts rearranged.
Where people lose it
Rotating the whole picture in your head at once, which is slow and unreliable under time.
How to work itRankHigh method
- Count sides and corners first. If those differ, no rotation will make the figures match.
- Track ONE corner rather than the whole shape, and see where it lands.
- Check for a mirror as well as a turn — a mirrored figure can never be rotated back onto the original.
- Eliminate on a single mismatched feature rather than confirming a whole match.
Track one corner. Check for a mirror.
