When is the New York Local Police Lieutenant exam held?

There is no statewide date, and anyone who gives you one for this title is guessing. Your own agency schedules its sitting, and that is the only date that applies to you.

The Department writes the test; your agency schedules it

Under section 23.2 of the Civil Service Law the Department of Civil Service prepares and rates the examination. Administering it is the local civil service agency's job, and each one announces its own sitting with its own examination number and keeps its own eligible list.

Orange County is the worked example. It sat examination #70981010 on 9 November 2024 and #70018150 on 18 October 2025 — same title, same county, two different examinations eleven months apart.

Why no frequency is claimed here

Two sittings is not a cadence. We have not read a 2026 announcement for this title, so we do not say the examination is annual, biennial or anything else, and we do not publish a next date.

A commercial course provider advertising a term for this examination is not a source for when it runs. The announcement your own agency publishes is.

What this means for when to prepare

Because the filing period is your agency's and can be short, the useful time to prepare is before the announcement rather than after it.
