School Safety Agent vs Police Officer — Same Abilities, Different Exam
No — and comparing the ability lists will not tell you apart, because DCAS measures the same nine for both and defines them in the same words. What differs is the job, the notice, the exam number and the eligible list.
Why they look identical
Both notices list written comprehension, written expression, memorization, problem sensitivity, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, information ordering, spatial orientation and visualization, with the same one-line definition of each. DCAS builds its notices from a shared library of ability definitions, so the resemblance is real and it is not an accident.
It is also not a reason to think you can prepare for one by preparing for the other. The abilities are the vocabulary the test is described in, not the test.
What actually differs
The examples in the notices show the difference in what the abilities are asked about. The police notice illustrates its abilities with patrol and enforcement situations; this one illustrates visualization with an x-ray scanner and spatial orientation with reaching an incident inside a building.
- Different jobs — School Safety Agents are employed by the NYPD's School Safety Division and work in school buildings; police officers are sworn members of the service.
- Different exam numbers, each with its own filing period, fee and test date.
- Different eligible lists — passing one does not put you on the other.
- Different requirements — School Safety Agent qualifies on a four-year high school diploma or equivalent, and appointment carries Special Patrolman status rather than police officer status.
Which product you want
RankHigh sells them as separate products with separate question banks, because a scenario written for a school corridor is not a scenario written for a street grid, and a candidate deserves practice that reads like the job they applied for.
If you filed for a School Safety Agent exam number, this is the product. If you filed for Police Officer, the NYPD product is a different page and a different bank. If you are unsure which you filed for, your OASys dashboard names the exam number, and the notice for that number is the authority on everything on this page.
