What you have to take

This is DOCCS's own state exam, not the county-jail test

New York runs two entirely separate correction-sergeant written examinations. County jails and sheriff's departments use the First Line Correction Supervisors Series, prepared by the NYS Department of Civil Service and administered locally by each county. DOCCS's state prisons use their own exam — number 31-109010, open only to DOCCS employees — with its own three subject areas and its own source list: the Employee Manual, the Incarcerated Individual Rule Book, and DOCCS directives. If your eligibility runs through DOCCS rather than a county civil service agency, this is your exam.

How this preparation is built

These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.

  • Every question is original
  • Every question carries an approval record
  • Every answer is explained
  • Every question names the source it was written from
  • The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
Every question is original
Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
Every question carries an approval record
A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
Every answer is explained
All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
Every question names the source it was written from
Every one of them cites the published provision the answer rests on — 236 different ones in all — so any answer here can be checked against the document itself rather than taken on our word. Where the published material is revised, the reference is what makes finding the affected questions a search rather than a re-read. A citation is a statement about provenance and nothing more: it says where the question came from, not that the answer is right.
The bank is measured, not just proofread
Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

Questions

Is this the county-jail Correction Sergeant test?

No. This prepares DOCCS's own state promotional exam (31-109010), open only to DOCCS employees. The county-jail First Line Correction Supervisors Series is a separate examination, prepared by the Department of Civil Service and administered by each county's own civil service agency, with a different subject-area list and a different source of law.

Does this cover DOCCS's Employee Manual in full?

DOCCS's own public posting of its Employees' Manual withholds ten of its thirty-four sections — every one of them about physical inmate custody, a security post, or a tactical response, including its own escapes-and-emergencies section, which is completely redacted. RankHigh does not claim, guess at, or reconstruct that withheld content. The emergency and security module is instead built from DOCCS's own public Use-of-Force directive and its public fire-safety section, both read in full.

How many questions are on the real examination, and how long is it?

DOCCS does not publish either figure for this exam, and no test guide with a sample question exists for it.

What does the score actually decide?

The written score, with seniority credit (one credit per five-year period, excluding the first year) and wartime veterans' credit added afterward, places you on a statewide DOCCS promotional eligible list. DOCCS does not publish a passing score for this administration.

Has a person reviewed these questions?

Not yet. Every question has been through RankHigh's automated review, and the count of questions read by a human reviewer is zero. We say so rather than letting the word 'reviewed' do work it has not earned.
