What you have to take

One rung up from Correction Sergeant — a genuinely different exam

Correction Lieutenant is DOCCS's next promotional rung above Correction Sergeant, open only to serving DOCCS Sergeants. It is not a bigger version of the Sergeant exam: the Lieutenant announcement adds a fourth subject area, Writing Skills, and scopes its rules-and-procedures area to five named categories — Labor Relations, Personnel, Support Operations, Facility Management and Security Services — that the Sergeant announcement does not name in the same way. Its Administrative Supervision area is a scenario-based 'job simulation' section, licensed here by the New York State Department of Civil Service's own published sample and worked answer key for that exact subject.

  • Rank-specific practice across this exam’s prepared areas

How this preparation is built

These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.

  • Every question is original
  • Every question carries an approval record
  • Every answer is explained
  • The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
Every question is original
Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
Every question carries an approval record
A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
Every answer is explained
All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
The bank is measured, not just proofread
Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

Questions

Is this the same exam as Correction Sergeant?

No. Correction Lieutenant is a separate, higher promotional exam (31-453020), open only to serving Correction Sergeants, with a fourth subject area — Writing Skills — that the Sergeant exam does not have, and a rules-and-procedures area scoped to five named categories the Sergeant announcement does not use in the same way.

What is the 'job simulation' Administrative Supervision section?

It is a multiple-choice scenario format, not a live exercise, video or interview — the announcement itself confirms 'you must pass the multiple-choice test.' The New York State Department of Civil Service publishes a generic sample of this exact subject with a full worked answer key, used across many of its promotional exams, and RankHigh's questions are built to teach that same published standard through fresh, DOCCS-specific scenarios.

Does this cover DOCCS's Employee Manual in full?

DOCCS's own public posting of its Employees' Manual withholds ten of its thirty-four sections — every one of them about physical inmate custody, a security post, or a tactical response. RankHigh does not claim, guess at, or reconstruct that withheld content. The rules-and-procedures and emergency-and-security modules are built from the sections and directives DOCCS actually publishes.

How many questions are on the real examination, and how long is it?

DOCCS does not publish either figure for this exam, and no test guide with a sample question exists for it.

Has a person reviewed these questions?

Not yet. Every question has been through RankHigh's automated review, and the count of questions read by a human reviewer is zero. We say so rather than letting the word 'reviewed' do work it has not earned.
