What you have to take

The writing test is where people are removed

CBP says candidates who do not score high enough on Writing Skills are removed before Logical Reasoning. The three parts run in order, so preparation starts before CBP sends the test invitation. Check your current vacancy announcement for how scores are used in hiring. RankHigh is independent preparation and is not affiliated with CBP or DHS.

RankHigh preparation

Three parts in a fixed order, and the Writing Skills Test comes second — candidates who do not pass it are removed before the Logical Reasoning Test is offered

Buying RankHigh does not apply you for the official exam.

Exam-change alerts are planned as a separate opt-in.

Parts
Three — Experience Record, Writing Skills, Logical Reasoning
Time allowed
60, then 63, then 83 minutes
Order
Fixed — the writing test decides whether you reach the reasoning test
Format
Both scored tests are computer adaptive · no published question count
After a failing score
90-day wait before you may retest

The Writing Skills Test

63 minutes · computer adaptive · four options per question

Grammar, syntax, usage, sentence and paragraph organization, punctuation and spelling, across the four formats CBP publishes: correcting a sentence, choosing the best-written of four, spelling and possessives, and putting four paragraphs into a coherent order. Fail it and the process ends here.

Prepared in full by the modules below

The Logical Reasoning Test

83 minutes · computer adaptive · five options per question

A paragraph you must accept as true, followed by five conclusions — either one validly follows and four do not, or four do and one does not. The same instrument the Border Patrol Agent examination uses; CBP teaches it from the same lesson in both guides.

Prepared in full by the modules below

The Candidate Experience Record

60 minutes · complete within 72 hours of CBP's email

A short online assessment about your own background and experience. CBP's own guidance is that “you also do not need to prepare beforehand to complete the questions”. RankHigh does not coach it — there is nothing honest to practice on a background inventory.

Not prepared by RankHigh — CBP states no preparation is needed

How this preparation is built

These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.

  • Every question is original
  • Every question carries an approval record
  • Every answer is explained
  • The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
Every question is original
Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
Every question carries an approval record
A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
Every answer is explained
All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
The bank is measured, not just proofread
Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

Questions

Is RankHigh affiliated with CBP or DHS?

No. RankHigh is independent third-party preparation and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by U.S. Customs and Border Protection or the Department of Homeland Security. We name the examination because that is what it is called and because you need to know which test this prepares. CBP's own study guide, lesson videos and practice tests come from CBP; this does not.

Can I really be removed after the writing test?

Yes, and CBP says so plainly: if you do not score high enough on the Writing Skills Test, you are removed from the process and are not invited to take the Logical Reasoning Test. It is the second of the three parts and it runs within five days of the first. That is why this product leads with writing rather than with reasoning.

Does a higher score improve my chances?

CBP's entrance-exam guide does not establish how your vacancy uses scores. Check the current announcement for your vacancy; RankHigh does not infer a ranking rule from an expired posting.

What score do I need to pass?

CBP does not publish one for either test, so neither do we. It is not in the preparation guide, on the careers page or in any job announcement. CBP confirms a threshold exists — its retest rule begins “if you do not obtain a passing score” — without saying what it is. Figures circulating on prep sites have no official source we can find, and we will not print a number CBP has not published.

Are RankHigh's practice tests the same as the real test?

No. Both scored tests are COMPUTER ADAPTIVE — each question's difficulty is chosen from how you answered the previous ones — and CBP publishes no question count for either, because an adaptive test does not have a fixed length. Nobody outside CBP can reproduce that. What we give you is 2 fixed-form practice tests of 77 questions, writing first then reasoning, in CBP's own published 63 and 83 minutes. That rehearses the formats, the order, the pace and the discipline of not being able to go back — and we call them RankHigh practice tests everywhere they appear.

Is the reasoning test the same as the Border Patrol one?

As far as CBP's published materials go, yes — and we say so rather than selling you the same thing twice without mentioning it. The Border Patrol Agent and CBP Officer preparation guides teach logical reasoning from the same lesson, and seven of their eight practice questions are identical word for word. Our reasoning bank is shared between the two products for that reason. What is not shared is the writing test: Border Patrol does not have one.

More questions (4)
Which announcements does this examination apply to?

The GS-5 and GS-7 CBP Officer announcements. CBP's careers page states that applicants for those are required to complete the entrance examination as part of the pre-employment process; the GS-9 announcement does not mention it.

Is this a subscription?

No. It is a single payment of $49. Nothing recurring, nothing to cancel, and no card kept on file for later.

How long do I have access?

Your access opens online as soon as payment clears — there is nothing to wait for in the post. Your one-time purchase includes 90 days of access from the time payment clears. No subscription. No automatic renewal. One payment, nothing recurring, nothing to cancel.

Does RankHigh guarantee a passing score?

No, and be careful with anyone who does. What this does is show you which areas are costing you points and give you focused practice on them. The work is still yours to do.

RankHigh is an independent preparation product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Federal government, or any city, county or department. Application and hiring decisions are made by the hiring authority — check the official posting for anything that decides your application.
