Coverage notes

  • Where your commission adds its own Part II it is not prepared — Suffolk County's covers its departmental manual and is worth up to 6.0 points.
  • The two extra subject areas the Detective and Criminal Investigator titles take are not prepared; this prepares the Police Sergeant areas.
  • A promotional eligible list is certified only to the jurisdiction you work in, so a result does not travel.

What you have to take

One test, ninety-odd commissions, and it is not the New York City exam

Most local civil service examinations outside New York City are prepared by the New York State Department of Civil Service and administered by the local commission that runs the title. Over ninety of them operate the merit system across the state. That is why Oneida County and the City of Watertown announced Police Sergeant examinations under different exam numbers and administered them on the same day.

New York City is not part of this. NYPD runs its own promotional examinations through DCAS, scored on the Department's own Patrol Guide, and no New York City title is in the Police Supervisors/Investigators Series. Nassau County self-prepares. If your announcement tells you to read the state's Police Supervisors/Investigators test guide, this is your examination.

Part I — the state's five subject areas

Prepared here in full

Law enforcement methods and practices; New York State Laws; preparing written material in a police setting; understanding and interpreting written material; supervision. Those are the five areas Oneida, Watertown, Suffolk and Lewis all reproduce from the Department's guide.

Decides your rank

Part II — a jurisdiction's own manual, where one exists

Not prepared here

Some commissions add a part on their own departmental manual. Suffolk County's is on the Suffolk County Police Department Manual for Rules and Procedures and is worth up to 6.0 points added to a passing Part I. Oneida, Watertown and Lewis have none. Check your own announcement.

Decides your rank

Seniority credit

Arithmetic, not preparation

Added to a passing score on a formula your jurisdiction publishes. Oneida bands it to six points, Watertown to five. There is nothing to prepare and nothing you can do about it on test day.

Subject Area 2

New York State Laws, with the section on every question

One hundred forty-three questions on the Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law and Family Court Act. Every one of them names the section it was written from, so you can check the answer against the statute rather than against us.

  • Penal Law definitions, the larceny, robbery, burglary and assault degrees, justification and the custody offences
  • The CPL arrest distinction a sergeant is asked about most: any OFFENCE in your presence, a CRIME whether in your presence or not
  • VTL 1192 and 1194, leaving the scene, aggravated unlicensed operation
  • Family Court Act custody of a child, and the concurrent jurisdiction of the family and criminal courts

Everything included

  • Rank-specific practice across this exam’s prepared areas
  • Worked explanations after every served question
  • Missed-question and due-review queues
  • Timed practice in this exam’s configured format

All of it is online: RankHigh runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to download and nothing is posted to you.

How this preparation is built

These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.

  • Every question is original
  • Every question carries an approval record
  • Every answer is explained
  • The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
Every question is original
Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
Every question carries an approval record
A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
Every answer is explained
All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
The bank is measured, not just proofread
Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

Questions

Is this the NYPD sergeant exam?

No. NYPD runs its own promotional examination through New York City DCAS, scored on the Department's Patrol Guide. This is the New York State Department of Civil Service's Police Supervisors/Investigators Series, which local commissions outside New York City administer for Police Sergeant and equivalent titles.

How many questions are on the real test?

The Department does not publish an item count for this title, and neither do the announcements. It publishes an overall time allowance of 5 hours 30 minutes for the series. Any number you see quoted for the item count is somebody's estimate, and it is not ours.

How is each subject area weighted?

Not published. The guide lists the subject areas and does not say how many questions come from each, so nobody outside the Department can tell you. That is why this package does not state a percentage of the examination anywhere.

Does my jurisdiction add a Part II?

Some do and most of the ones we have read do not. Suffolk County adds a Part II on its own departmental manual worth up to 6.0 points, added to a passing Part I. Oneida, Watertown and Lewis do not. Your announcement will say.

When is the next test?

The examination has been held on a common statewide date in June for at least three consecutive years, with announcements published around March. The Department has not published a date for the next exam, and we do not state one.

Do I need to buy any books?

Not for this examination. The Department's guide names no textbook, no reading list and no publisher — it is scored on the Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law and Family Court Act, which the State publishes free, together with general police methods and supervision principles.

More questions (2)
Has a person reviewed these questions?

Not yet. These questions have been through an automated review pipeline and, for the law questions, a check against the published statute text. No human has read them, and we say so rather than implying otherwise.

Can I use my score in another county?

No. A promotional eligible list is certified only to the jurisdiction where you are employed, so the score does not travel. That is true of promotional examinations generally, not just this one.

RankHigh is an independent preparation product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to New York State Department of Civil Service, the New York government, or any city, county or department. Application and hiring decisions are made by the hiring authority — check the official posting for anything that decides your application. The blueprint is the Department's own Test Guide for the Police Supervisors/Investigators Series, read end to end, and four Sergeant announcements read in full — Oneida, Watertown, Suffolk and Lewis. The law questions are written from the statute text the State Legislature publishes, and each cites its section so you can check it.
