NYPD Memorization Questions

No, you cannot look back — and that single fact is what makes this section hard. You study the material for a set period, it is taken away, and the questions are answered from what you retained.

Study period
Five minutes, per the official preparation kit
Looking back
Not permitted once the study time ends
Material
Words, numbers, pictures and procedures

What the official kit actually says

The NYPD's own Test Preparation Kit instructs candidates to study the material for five minutes, then turn the page away and answer based solely on what they were given, and prints in capitals that they may not look back. That is the mechanic, from the source rather than from a preparation site.

The Notice of Examination describes the ability as remembering information such as words, numbers, pictures and procedures.

How to study material you are about to lose

The common mistake is reading the material like a story. You are not being asked what happened; you are being asked for names, numbers, times and descriptions, and those are what vanish first.

  • Count before you read. Knowing there are three people, two vehicles and one address gives every later detail somewhere to attach.
  • Never memorise a number on its own. A plate, an apartment or a time is retained by the person or place it belongs to, and lost when it is stored loose.
  • Spend the last of the five minutes on the two or three facts you know you have not fixed, and let the ones you have go.
  • Assume every wrong option will be a genuine detail from the material you just studied — recognising a number is not the same as remembering where it belonged.

How RankHigh practices it

Memory items here work the way the kit describes: the material appears, the time runs, and then it is withdrawn and cannot be reopened. Practising against material that stays on the screen trains the wrong thing entirely.

The official kit's material includes photographs and mug shots. RankHigh's does not — these items use original written material, so the recall demand is the same while nothing is reproduced from the examination.
