What you have to take

One state test, and your county decides what is on it

The Department of Civil Service writes and rates this examination; your county, city or town announces and administers its own exam. That is why two candidates preparing for the same series can face different examinations — the guide says the announcement specifies which subject areas appear, and announcements read this year carried two, three and four of the five. The one every examination in the series includes is Operations with Letters and Numbers. It is also not the entry-level police series, which is a different guide with different subject areas.

The written examination

5 published subject areas · 3-hour allowance

Multiple choice, covering spelling, alphabetizing, record keeping, operations with letters and numbers, and using a directory. Your own examination announcement names which of the five it uses.

Typing and database performance tests

Only for certain titles

Some jurisdictions attach a separate typing test — Sullivan County requires 35 words a minute — or a database test for candidates who want to be considered for those particular titles. They are rated pass or fail, they sit outside the five subject areas, and not every candidate takes one.

How this preparation is built

These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.

  • Every question is original
  • Every question carries an approval record
  • Every answer is explained
  • The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
Every question is original
Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
Every question carries an approval record
A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
Every answer is explained
All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
The bank is measured, not just proofread
Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

Questions

Which subject areas will actually be on my test?

Your examination announcement names them, and they differ. The official test guide says the announcement specifies the subject areas for that particular examination, and that every examination in the series includes Operations with Letters and Numbers. Three county announcements read in September 2026 carried two, three and four of the five between them. That is why RankHigh prepares all five rather than guessing at a subset — read your own announcement, then spend most of your time on what it lists.

How many questions are on the examination, and how long is it?

The guide publishes an overall test time allowance of three hours and does not publish a number of questions — we searched it, and it states none. So RankHigh will not quote one. The practice tests here are 50 questions in 75 minutes, which is RankHigh's own pace for rehearsal and not a claim about the length of your exam.

What score do I need to pass?

The series test guide states no passing score. What is published is the general New York civil service rating rule, which appears on the jurisdictions' own announcements — Sullivan County prints that examinations are rated on a scale of 100 with the passing mark at 70. Check your own announcement, because the appointing jurisdiction is what states it. Beyond passing, candidates are placed on the eligible list in rank by score, so where you sit matters as much as clearing the mark.

Is this the same test as the entry-level police examination?

No. The Department of Civil Service publishes a separate test guide for the Entry-Level Law Enforcement Officer Series with entirely different subject areas. This product prepares the clerical series only, and nothing in it is shared with a police bank.

Does this cover the typing test?

No. Some jurisdictions attach a separate typing performance test — Sullivan County requires 35 words a minute — or a database performance test, for candidates who want to be considered for those particular titles. They are rated pass or fail, they are not part of the five written subject areas, and RankHigh does not prepare them.

Which jobs does this examination lead to?

One eligible list is typically certified for a family of entrance-level clerical titles. Sullivan County names Clerk, Typist, Database Clerk, Library Clerk, Library Typist, Receptionist, Central Services Worker and Assessor's Clerk Trainee; Lewis County names Clerk, Keyboard Specialist and Office Specialist. The list is usually certified for vacancies across the county's own departments and its towns, villages, school districts and special districts. Your announcement lists the titles and employers it covers.

More questions (3)
Is this a subscription?

No. It is a single payment of $49. Nothing recurring, nothing to cancel, and no card kept on file for later.

How long do I have access?

Your access opens online as soon as payment clears — there is nothing to wait for in the post. Your one-time purchase includes 90 days of access from the time payment clears. No subscription. No automatic renewal. One payment, nothing recurring, nothing to cancel.

Does RankHigh guarantee a passing score?

No, and be careful with anyone who does. What this does is show you which areas are costing you points and give you focused practice on them. The work is still yours to do.
