What reading comprehension actually tests

POST's guide states that passages cover common concepts and contain the information necessary to answer the questions. That sentence is the whole strategy: every answer is derivable from the text in front of you, and anything you bring from outside is a liability rather than an advantage.

Passages run from a single paragraph to a full page, and the questions span stated detail, main idea, inference the text genuinely entails, the relationship between two stated facts, the meaning of a term as the passage uses it, and applying a stated rule to a new case.

Where candidates lose points

The two expensive habits are answering from experience instead of from the passage, and accepting an option that is true in the world but not supported by the text. A wrong option that is factually reasonable is far more dangerous than one that is obviously absurd.

The other trap is the option that overstates a correct idea — the passage says something often happens and the option says it always does.

How RankHigh trains it

Every passage is original, written for this bank about invented organisations rather than adapted from any published source.

Every passage received a factual-plausibility audit separate from answer-key review, because a passage can be internally consistent and still assert something untrue about the world. Two passages were rewritten as a result — one had presented a British emergency-lighting standard as though it were a general requirement.
