What you have to take
Where the written test sits in Cathedral City Fire hiring
Cathedral City Fire Department requires the FCTC written test in its own hiring process. RankHigh's FCTC Firefighter package is the preparation for that written test, and it is fully online — you work through it in a web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. It is one product, and this page sells it — there is no Cathedral City Fire edition and no Cathedral City Fire question bank. Everything above this line is quoted from Cathedral City Fire or its administrator, with the source and the date it was read. Everything in this section is RankHigh's own description of its product. RankHigh prepares the written test only. Any physical, oral, background, psychological or medical stage Cathedral City Fire Department runs is its own, and nothing here trains it.

Verified exam details
- What is specific to Cathedral City Fire
- Cathedral City publishes a distance rule rather than a residency one: a hire has to settle within a stated driving distance of the city boundary before probation ends, and the announcement even names the mapping tool the city measures that distance with.
- Placement on the statewide list is not a step in the selection process here but a condition of the application being considered complete at all, so a candidate who applies before their list placement is confirmed has not really applied.
- The department takes either the Candidate Physical Ability Test or the Biddle test, and waives the physical requirement outright for people already employed as active firefighters.
- It admits two quite different routes to the same starting line — a state-accredited fire academy, or two years of full-time paid municipal firefighting — so experience can stand in for the academy certificate.
- Statewide list requirement
- Must be current on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List (SEL)
- Residency
- Must live within 150 miles of the City limits by the end of their probationary period. The calculation of the 150 miles shall be made using Google Maps driving directions.
- Physical test
- Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) or Biddle issued within the last year (12) months.
- Physical test waiver
- Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) or Biddle waived for active employees.
- When an application is complete
- Online Applications are considered complete upon receipt of all certifications and confirmation of FCTC Statewide Eligibility list placement.
- Entry routes
- Completion of a California State Fire Marshal accredited Fire Academy or two years full-time paid firefighting experience with a municipal department
- Not published
- The announcement states no score the department requires on the FCTC written test beyond the placement the list itself demands
- It publishes no closing date, and no number of vacancies
- Agency
- Cathedral City, Riverside County

Pass/fail gate
The written test
100 questions · 70% to pass · 2 hours 30 minutes
Four sections: technical information recalled from a packet collected after thirty minutes (35 questions), two video scenarios (20), mechanical reasoning (25) and mathematics (20).
80 of the 100 questions prepared in full by the modules below
The video section
20 of the 100 questions
Two short video scenarios are played and questions follow immediately. RankHigh has no video engine and does not reproduce FCTC's format. Our observation drills train the underlying skill — take in a scene, lose sight of it, report the detail — using original static scenes. Use FCTC's own authorized materials to see the official video format.
Skill practice only — RankHigh does not reproduce the official format
The CPAT
A separate test with its own fee
Reaching the Statewide Eligibility List needs the Candidate Physical Ability Test as well as the written test. It is a separate event, booked and paid for separately. This product is written test preparation and does not coach it.
Not prepared by RankHigh — written test only

How this preparation is built
These are the automated checks every question goes through before it can be served. They are run over the whole bank, by software, every time it changes.
- Every question is original
- Every question carries an approval record
- Every answer is explained
- The bank is measured, not just proofread
How questions are checked
- Every question is original
- Each one is written for RankHigh. Nothing is taken from a real examination, a competitor's bank or a public question set, and every new batch is checked for duplicates against every other question in the catalog.
- Every question carries an approval record
- A question that has not been through these checks is not served at all. That is what this product serves, not what has been written.
- Every answer is explained
- All of them, not the hard ones. An explanation says why the keyed answer is right and what each of the other options gets wrong, so a question you got wrong is worth more to you than one you got right.
- The bank is measured, not just proofread
- Answer positions, answer lengths and repeated scenarios are measured across the whole bank against chance. Where a pattern would let somebody pick the answer from its shape instead of its content, the questions are repaired — because a pattern you can learn here is one that will not be there on the day.

Questions
Is RankHigh affiliated with FCTC or Cal-JAC?
No. RankHigh is independent third-party preparation. FCTC states that only materials it provides are authorized or endorsed by FCTC, and nothing here is. We name the examination because that is what it is called and because you need to know which test this prepares — not to suggest any connection. FCTC's own free study guide and its paid prep class come from FCTC; this does not.
Does this cover the video section?
No, and that is worth being plain about. Two of the four sections' worth of questions — 20 of the 100 — come from watching two short video scenarios, and RankHigh has no video engine. What we do instead is train the skill those questions test: our observation drills show you a scene, take it away and ask what was there. That is useful practice and it is not the official format. For the format itself, use FCTC's own materials.
So how much of the test does this actually prepare?
Eighty of the hundred questions, in their real format: 35 technical information recall, 25 mechanical reasoning and 20 mathematics. Those are FCTC's own published section sizes. The remaining 20 are the video section.
Why pay for this when FCTC sells a study guide and a practice test?
Because they answer different questions. FCTC's study guide is free, its prep class is $25 and its practice test is $25 — all of them authoritative, and you should use them, because nothing here is official and they are. RankHigh adds repeatable, targeted practice, explanations that teach, weak-area review and timed practice across the three sections it prepares.
Are RankHigh's practice tests the same length and timing as the real test?
No, and the difference is deliberate. The real exam is 100 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. RankHigh's practice tests are 80 questions, because that is the three sections we reproduce at FCTC's own published sizes — 35 technical recall, 25 mechanical, 20 mathematics — with nothing invented to stand in for the 20 video questions. The time limit on our practice tests is our own pace and is not FCTC's. The one timing here that IS official is the thirty-minute study period before the technical section, because FCTC publishes it; the clock holds while you read, so studying is never charged against your answering time.
How does the technical recall section work?
You are given an essay packet and thirty minutes to read it. After thirty minutes the packets are collected and you answer questions about them from memory, along with questions about other essays that stay in the test booklet. RankHigh trains it the same way: the material appears, the clock runs, the material goes, and the questions follow. The thirty minutes is FCTC's own published figure, not ours.
More questions (5)
What score do I need, and how long does it last?
FCTC states 70% to pass and that a score is valid for one year. Past that, each participating department sets its own passing grade, so what counts as a good score depends on where you are applying. You may retake the test, but not more than once in any 30-day period, and only your most recent score counts.
Does this prepare the CPAT?
No. The Candidate Physical Ability Test is a separate event with its own fee, and reaching the Statewide Eligibility List needs both it and the written test. This product is written test preparation only.
Is this a subscription?
No. It is a single payment of $49. Nothing recurring, nothing to cancel, and no card kept on file for later.
How long do I have access?
Your access opens online as soon as payment clears — there is nothing to wait for in the post. Your one-time purchase includes 90 days of access from the time payment clears. No subscription. No automatic renewal. One payment, nothing recurring, nothing to cancel.
Does RankHigh guarantee a passing score?
No, and be careful with anyone who does. What this does is show you which areas are costing you points and give you focused practice on them. The work is still yours to do.
